Purposes of Homework
- Practice: Homework gives kids the chance to practice what they learned in class.
- Thinking: Homework gets kids thinking about what they learned when they're outside of school. This gives the brain a chance to continue learning in a different environment.
- Preparation: Homework may be given to help prepare students for testing, or to use new information in a particular situation. It also reinforces the student's responsibility for her education.
- Extension: Homework may extend learning by adding new information to what was discussed in class. It also helps build thinking skills and helps personalize the learning.
I give out homework packs on Monday and they are due back in Friday morning. This also includes a "Reading Log" which the students need to do every night. The packs are given to allow students do 2-3 pages daily and read and fill in their book log every evening. My goal is to establish good working habits as well as create daily reading routines. I find that the most successful students have parents who are actively involved in their child's homework. Parent's need to check it, help them, and make sure their child reads everyday.
